Qualsafe First Aid at Work

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) is a nationally recognised and regulated qualification suitable for workplace First Aiders and individuals providing first aid in voluntary or community settings. This qualification meets the HSE training standards for First Aid at Work.

Course content

This Qualsafe course covers a range of essential first aid topics, including:

Roles and responsibilities of a first aider: Understanding the legal requirements and duties associated with being a first aider in the workplace.

Assessment of the situation: How to assess the scene of an incident to ensure safety for yourself, the casualty and others.

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Techniques for performing CPR on adults, children and infants, including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Dealing with unconscious casualties: Recognising and managing unconscious casualties, including safe airway positioning and monitoring.

Choking: Procedures for assisting a choking casualty, including abdominal thrusts (Heimlich manoeuvre) for adults, children and infants.

Bleeding and wounds: Techniques for controlling bleeding, applying dressings and managing different types of wounds.

Shock: Recognising and providing first aid treatment for shock, including positioning casualties and monitoring vital signs.

Minor injuries: Treatment of minor injuries such as cuts, grazes, bruises and minor burns.

Fractures, sprains and strains: Recognising and managing musculoskeletal injuries, including immobilisation techniques.

Medical emergencies: Recognition and initial treatment of common medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, seizures and asthma attacks.

Record keeping: The importance of accurate and timely documentation of first aid incidents and actions taken.

First aid equipment: Familiarisation with the contents and use of first aid kits and equipment available in the workplace.

Communication: Effective communication with casualties, bystanders, emergency services and other responders.

Hygiene and infection control: Understanding the importance of maintaining hygiene and preventing infection transmission during first aid interventions.

Mental health first aid: Basic awareness and support techniques for addressing mental health crises in the workplace.
