IPAF Instructor Training

Becoming an IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) instructor allows you to train and assess individuals on the safe operation of various Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) such as scissor lifts, boom lifts, and vertical personnel platforms. This is a crucial role, as operating MEWPs requires proper training and licensing to comply with safety regulations like the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations Act 1998.

Requirements to become an IPAF instructor

To qualify for the IPAF instructor training course, you must meet several prerequisites:
MEWP operating experience: You need a minimum of 36 months of experience operating MEWPs.

IPAF Operator Licence: You must have held an IPAF Operator Licence for at least 6 months.

IPAF Demonstrator Licence: You must have held an IPAF Demonstrator Licence for at least 3 months.

IPAF MEWPs for Managers course: You need to have successfully completed the IPAF MEWPs for Managers course.

Instructional techniques training: Evidence of completing a recognized instructional techniques training course (minimum 3 days) is required.

Harness Instructor course: You must have successfully completed an approved Harness Instructor course.

First Aid at Work training: Evidence of possessing the HSE required standard for First Aid at Work training level is mandatory.

IPAF instructor training course content and duration

The IPAF instructor training course typically spans five days, consisting of both theoretical and practical components.
Theory (4 days): This section focuses on understanding the IPAF training program, MEWP knowledge, and assessment of your ability to effectively convey information to trainees.
Practical Assessment (1 day): An IPAF Examiner will conduct a final examination to assess your instructional and practical abilities.
Mentoring: Some courses also include 3 days of mentoring from an experienced IPAF instructor to refine your teaching techniques.

What the training covers

The training focuses on equipping you to teach a range of IPAF courses, including:
IPAF Operator Courses: For individuals who will be operating MEWPs.
IPAF Demonstrator Courses: For individuals who will be familiarizing operators with equipment and demonstrating safe operating procedures.
IPAF MEWPs for Managers: For individuals who supervise or plan working at height using MEWPs.

Career prospects

Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a PAL Instructor Card (Powered Access Licence) valid for five years, along with a safety guide, logbook, and certificate.

You will be qualified to deliver IPAF-accredited training programs for MEWPs and/or MCWPs (Mast Climbing Work Platforms), depending on the specific training taken.

You can be employed by an IPAF-approved training centre or become a registered independent instructor and deliver training through a centre.
